These fascinating islands are in Northern Mozambique, and are
connected to the mainland with a long bridge. Rustic churches,
palaces and mosques dating back from as far as the 17th century
cover the island. It is difficult to get to this region by vehicle,
but certainly should not be missed if you are in the vicinity.
The Bazaruto Archipelago, lies a short distance away from the coast
to the east of Vilanculos and consists of the islands Bazaruto,
Magaruque, Santa Carolina and Benguerra (Benguela).
One can visit
these islands with a charter plane from Maputo or Johannesburg, or
by dhow boat from Vilanculos and Inhassoro.
The islands cater for
the up market tourist (although Benguerra has a camp site) and a few
secluded lodges with good facilities will spoil you in this tropical
There is some animal life, but the most amazing is the tranquility and the riches of the ocean with a sea-floor covered
with rainbow colored reefs that also act as breeding ground for
turtles, dugongs and dolphins.
